Jobs to do in your garden during January...

• Prune apple and pear trees (but not stone fruit trees)

• Prune shrub roses and climbing roses

• Remove tatty and blackened leaves from hellebores

• Add organic matter and mulch to soil (but not when frosty or frozen)

• Air greenhouse and clean pots ready for spring

• Sew seeds indoors (early veg and hardy annuals e.g. sweet peas)

• Prepare beds ready for spring planting

• Keep bird feeders topped up

• Continue to leave out dried cat biscuits for hedgehogs
